Early pregnancy scan before 8 weeks

Here I will share with you what to expect from an early scan at 6 week….

Two weeks after IVF pregnancy test positive (around 6 weeks pregnant), I started to notice some brown discharge and occasionally sharp pain lower down in my tummy.

Early scan due to suspected ectopic pregnancy

Having these two symptoms together in early pregnancy could be caused by a serious complication such as ectopic pregnancy, meaning embryo has embedded itself outside of the womb. It is well known that IVF pregnancy has an increase chance of a pregnant being ectopic.

Ectopic pregnancy is a serious complication that needs to be treated promptly, otherwise it could be life threatening. So after report the symptoms to my IVF clinic, my doctor wanted to give me an ultrasound scan to rule out ectopic pregnancy. It was so urgent that I got booked in for an early scan on the same day, which is at about 6 weeks pregnant at the time.

Typically, the earliest pregnancy scan is offered when you are around 8 weeks pregnant. This is to ensure that the embryo has grown big enough to be seen from the ultrasound scan. What you normally see at 8 weeks pregnant scan is the fetal heartbeat, which appears as a flickering little dot on the scan.

So a scan at 6 weeks pregnant id considered very early and you might not able to see anything.

What we see at 6 weeks pregnant ultrasound scan ?

Well. In my case, after a long thorough searched by two different doctors, no sign of embryo could be seen from the scan. Nothing at all, neither in the womb or outside of the womb (follipian tubes, ovaries etc.).

However, the blood tests had confirmed that I was still pregnant. You can read a full story of what happened after that here. Long story short, for me, the fetal heartbeat was seen on the scan at 7.5 weeks pregnant.
